Four stages of B2B prospecting: personal network, lists and mass mailings, automated sequences, and signals with people. What each added and what got lost.

B2B prospecting has changed tools many times. What has not changed is what makes it work: reaching the right person, at the right moment, with something they care about. Going through the stages shows what each one added and what got lost.
This is a simplification for practical purposes. The stages overlap and have no exact dates.
The salesperson knows the buyers, visits them, calls them and meets them at trade shows. It is slow and does not scale, but it has two virtues: context is very high and trust gets built.
Its limit is size. One person can only know a limited number of buyers.
Databases and email arrive. Suddenly you can write to thousands of companies in a day. Volume goes up and cost per contact goes down.
What gets lost is context. The same message reaches everyone, and buyers learn to ignore it. This stage works while commercial email is a novelty and stops working when everyone does it.
Tools arrive that schedule sends, follow-ups and personalization variables: name, company, job title. It is more efficient, but the underlying problem remains: personalizing a field is not understanding a case.
Recipients spot the template in seconds. Superficial personalization can even hurt your image.
AI can read a lot of information at once. It makes two things possible at scale that were not viable before: deciding who to write to because they look like your best customers, and detecting when the timing is right for them.
But the opening is human again: someone looks at the case, decides whether it deserves a message and writes it with judgment. AI restores, at volume, the context that stages 2 and 3 took away.
There is no good stage and bad stage. There is the one that fits your product, your sales cycle and your team. A company with a few large customers can stay in the first one just fine.
Hurus works in stage four: AI to identify the moment, humans to activate the relationship. We start from your best customers, look for similar ones, detect the buying moment and open conversations with context. You get the meeting.
As a simplification: personal network and trade shows, lists and mass mailings, automated sequences and, now, signals with people. Each stage gained something (context, volume, efficiency) and lost something.
Because the same message reaches everyone, with no context, and buyers learn to ignore it. Personalizing a field like the name is not the same as understanding a case.
It reads a lot of information, finds companies that look like your best customers and detects the moment. Opening the conversation still needs a person with judgment.
This article is based on working criteria, no external statistics. The stages are a simplification with no exact dates.
